Tomi Neckov, the federal chairman of the Association for Education and Training (VBE), has sharply criticized the inadequate air conditioning facilities in kindergartens and schools. Speaking to “Frankfurter Rundschau” via Ippen-Media, he stated that Germany is not yet sufficiently prepared for the increasingly frequent heatwaves, such as the recent occurrence.
Neckov pointed out that while many office buildings are equipped with air conditioning, this essential feature is often missing from kindergartens and schools. He stressed that the safety of children and staff must not be jeopardized. “There are cases where this danger exists because buildings heat up and the operators fail to implement sufficient measures. This cannot continue.”
The installation of air conditioning systems falls under the responsibility of both public and private providers. However, many are hesitant to invest in heating, air filtration, and cooling systems, often debating the likelihood of extreme temperature events or influenza outbreaks. The VBE chairman noted that while optimal infrastructure capable of reacting adequately to such conditions would be desirable, the reality is different, often due to a lack of financial means. Therefore, he argued that prioritization is necessary. Finally, he urged them to learn from the federal states that have historically managed high temperatures more effectively.
