Schoolbook Prices Rose as Notebook Costs Drop in Consumer Spending Surge

According to an announcement by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), consumers had to spend more on schoolbooks and writing and drawing materials in June 2026 compared to the previous year. Overall, prices for school or textbooks rose by 2.3 percent in June 2026 compared to June 2025. This rise matched the general increase in overall consumer prices for the same period, which also climbed by 2.3 percent. However, the price situation varied among different types of supplies. For instance, prices for paper products, such as notebooks or drawing pads, saw a slight decrease, falling by 0.3 percent compared to the previous year. Conversely, expenses for other writing and drawing materials-including fountain pens, pens, and color boxes-forced consumers to pay 3.5 percent more in June 2026 than they did in June 2025.
