Outgoing Minister-President Alexander Schweitzer has been elected as the chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in Rhineland-Palatinate. The party announced this decision on Wednesday. While Schweitzer previously held this position from 2014 to 2021, the state’s political landscape has shifted significantly following the recent state elections. Previously, Schweitzer led the largest government faction; however, he now heads the smaller of the two major coalition-forming parties. In contrast, the CDU has regained the top position in the state government after an absence of 35 years. A coalition agreement between the CDU and SPD has been sealed and is scheduled for signing this Wednesday. Following these developments, Gordon Schnieder of the CDU is slated to be elected the new Minister-President on May 18th.
