Security authorities warn that data centers and AI infrastructure are increasingly becoming targets for left-wing extremists and foreign actors. According to reports from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), companies that develop artificial intelligence or provide the necessary supporting infrastructure must anticipate these threats.
Left-wing extremists are specifically targeting data centers, often viewing them as symbols of large digital corporations and the expansion of artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, hostile foreign powers pose threats of both cyberattacks and physical sabotage. As one current example, the BfV notes an appeal against a major data center in Brandenburg, which reportedly originated from the left-wing extremist group “Barrio.”
A particular concern for the authorities is the protection of vital infrastructure located outside major population centers. Many new data centers are being built in rural areas, where they are considered relatively difficult to secure.
