Social Welfare Group Slams Jobcenter Directive Allowing Sanctions for Unprofessional Interview Appearance

The social association VdK has strongly criticized new guidelines issued by job centers regarding the reduction of payments for recipients of basic social security. The organization views the internal directive from the Federal Employment Agency very critically. VdK President Verena Bentele pointed out that the regulations rely on vague legal terminology, using phrases such as “negative behavior” or “very unkept.” Bentele noted that definitions like these are highly subjective, with every person applying a different standard.

Under these updated internal rules, job centers can now consider a violation of duties if a benefit recipient fails a job interview due to their conduct. The Federal Employment Agency cites examples such as applicants appearing “very unkept or intoxicated” for an interview and being rejected by the employer. In such cases, the basic security payments can be cut by as much as 30% for three months.

Bentele warned about the serious consequences of this lack of clarity. She stated that this ambiguity creates legal uncertainty for both the job center staff and the benefit recipients, opening the door to arbitrary decisions. She stressed that reliable and unambiguous rules are crucial, especially when it comes to ensuring existence. Furthermore, she added that the standard grants already provide only very limited funds for clothing and hygiene.
