Jens Spahn, the CDU faction leader, rejected the criticism directed at Chancellor Friedrich Merz by SPD faction chairman Matthias Miersch. Speaking to “Bild” (Friday edition), Spahn stated that such remarks undermine the Chancellor’s work during challenging times. He argued that focusing on internal disputes rather than cooperating is counterproductive, asserting that there is enough work to be done and that all parties should concentrate their efforts on working together. Miersch had sharply criticized Merz’s statements concerning the statutory pension, which Merz had called a “basic safety net”. Miersch was particularly critical of Merz’s appeal for “respect for those doing better” accusing him of exhibiting excessive impulsiveness and questioning whether he was fit to lead a Chancellery.
