Thorsten Frei, the chief of the CDU Parliamentary Group, expects the coalition to proceed with the upcoming reforms at a faster pace. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, he stated that “we must push through this now.”
Frei acknowledged that many citizens feel immense pressure in their daily lives, but he insisted they needed to be honest about the economic reality. He pointed out that Germany has not experienced growth for more than seven years, blaming the failing economic policies of the previous “Rainbow” government. While recognizing that people are already struggling and cannot “tighten their belts any further,” he offered a note of assurance, predicting that things will improve. He affirmed that the economy is slowly picking up and stressed that contributions to social systems remain stable.
According to Frei, the current reform efforts are progressing well, and the country is gradually overcoming its weaknesses in growth. His party is committed to consistently increasing competitiveness and ensuring the state becomes both smaller and more effective. He emphasized that the current government spending ratio is unusually high and must be reduced. Finally, the group leader predicted a rise in real wages, noting that payroll increases are outpacing inflation following the difficult economic years experienced between 2021 and 2023.
