Following Germany’s unsuccessful campaign for a seat on the UN Security Council, SPD Deputy Parliamentary Group Spokesperson Siemtje Möller called for the German government to adopt a clearer stance regarding international conflicts. Speaking to newspapers published by the Funke Media Group (on Thursday editions), Möller characterized the election outcome as disappointing, noting it delivered a clear message to Germany.
She emphasized that Germany relies on global partnerships and cannot secure its safety in isolation. “We need to invest more in these partnerships, especially in the Global South” Möller stated, adding that many critical questions and doubts have arisen concerning Germany’s role as an honest broker and a voice upholding the objectives and values of the United Nations, particularly from this region.
Möller insisted that Germany’s commitment as a trustworthy partner for global stability, the rule-based international order, and international law must become clearer and more decisive. This necessitates that the federal government publicly identifies actions that violate international law, regardless of the individuals or parties responsible.
“This result is also an expression of high expectations placed upon Germany, expectations we have clearly failed to meet at the moment from the perspective of the majority of UN member states” Möller concluded.
