SPD Demands Urgent Cooling Plans for Kindergartens and Nursing Homes Amid Heatwave Threat

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) is advocating for better protective measures for citizens across Germany due to the current heatwave. Vice Faction Member Esra Limbacher told the “Rheinische Post” (Friday edition) that the coalition government must urgently focus on heat protection within the social infrastructure. She stated: “We need more drinking fountains, more trees and shading, effective sun protection on buildings, and green outdoor areas.”

Limbacher added that given the extremely high temperatures, heat protection constitutes a central task of modern public services. She warned that kindergartens, nursing homes, and hospitals should not turn into ovens during the summer. If outdoor temperatures reach 40 degrees Celsius, protection must be possible indoors. This could be significantly aided by air conditioning, modern heat pumps with cooling functions, and other technical cooling solutions.

She emphasized that this is not merely a matter of comfort. “Especially children, people requiring care, chronically ill individuals, and elderly people rely on functioning protective measures,” Limbacher said. This call comes amid reports that in March, the newspaper “taz” had mentioned that in 2026, no new funding would be allocated through the Climate Adaptation program for social institutions, based on a response from the SPD-led Federal Environmental Ministry.

In terms of the current situation, the German Weather Service has issued warnings of intense heat across large parts of the country, with extreme thermal stress expected in the west and southwest. Meteorologists predict that this strong heat stress will spread to all of Germany on Friday and over the weekend, affecting areas from the southwest and west through the center and into the east. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), human-induced climate change is causing heatwaves to occur more frequently and grow more severe.
