Sebastian Roloff, the SPD leader in Bavaria, has urged the black-red coalition government to seek comprehensive compromises with critics from the federal states concerning planned social and tax reforms. According to the Bundestag MP, reform is only successful when all stakeholders are involved, including unions, employers, and the federal states. He stressed the importance of integrating the states early in the process, warning that those who wait until the end risk meeting significant resistance.
The SPD parliamentarian also addressed the Union’s proposal during the planned income tax reform to abolish the Solidarity Surcharge (Soli). Roloff, associated with the left wing of the SPD, stated that simply eliminating the Soli-a tax currently paid only by the top ten percent of earners-is not sound economic policy. However, he acknowledged that the issue could be discussed as part of a broader package deal, though he cautioned that it cannot serve as a standalone “panacea”.
