Dirk Wiese, the SPD parliamentary affairs director, indicated that the Bundestag could reach a swift decision once the necessary prerequisites for deploying the Bundeswehr in the Strait of Hormuz are finalized. Speaking to the press of Funke Mediengruppe, Wiese noted that while the Bundestag is fundamentally capable of quick action, the current deployment scenario represents the final stage of a complex process, requiring actions to be taken one step at a time.
According to Wiese, if the Bundeswehr were to be deployed for peacekeeping purposes, two conditions must first be met: an international mandate and, subsequently, a resolution from the German Bundestag. While the federal government has expressed willingness to support securing the Strait of Hormuz with the Bundeswehr following a US-Iran peace accord, the framework agreement is scheduled to be signed in Switzerland on Friday.
Wiese stated that the latest developments in the talks between the United States and Iran are encouraging. However, he emphasized that this framework agreement, which could help achieve a regional ceasefire, is merely a significant step forward. He cautioned that proceeding must be done very carefully, as comprehensive peace remains a distant goal. “First, the agreement must be signed on Friday, and the ceasefire must become permanent,” the SPD politician added.
