Former Federal Finance Minister Peer Steinbrück (SPD) characterized the current situation in Germany as unprecedented. Speaking to the “Executive Interview” format of “Der Spiegel”, Steinbrück stated that, to his memory, he has never experienced such a concentration of challenges, nor was the financial market crisis of 2008/09 more memorable.
He took the opportunity to criticize current politicians, voicing surprise at how little the political sphere has communicated the true dimension and consequences of this epochal change.
In a note of self-criticism concerning his own tenure in government, the former SPD Chancellor candidate reflected on past oversights. Steinbrück argued that his government was among those who failed to acknowledge the major issues at hand, referring to them as the “big elephants in the room”.
These ignored issues, according to Steinbrück, included the question of defense capability, a lack of competitive edge, and the immense demographic pressure placed on social security systems-a problem compounded by the increasing complexity of the welfare state. Furthermore, he highlighted that deficits in digitalization and infrastructure, alongside a failure to invest sufficiently in education, had been overlooked for too long.
