Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann has unexpectedly announced her candidacy for the chairmanship of the FDP. She was nominated for this role by the North Rhine-Westphalia regional association during Saturday’s party convention. Prior to this announcement, Wolfgang Kubicki was the sole candidate and had already been designated as the party chairperson. This emergence of a second candidate introduces a clear ideological choice at the FDP convention: Kubicki is characterized as having a more right-leaning stance. Although he is opposed to collaborating with the AfD, he is also not a strong adherent to the “firewall policy”. In contrast, Strack-Zimmermann represents the more liberal-left wing of the FDP. The outcome of the election remains completely undecided, and the vote is scheduled to take place in the afternoon.
