Thorsten Frei, head of the Chancellery for the CDU, attributes Germany’s failure to secure a seat on the UN Security Council primarily to structural issues, rather than any fault on the part of the Chancellor. Speaking to RTL and ntv on Friday, Frei noted that Germany “was certainly not in a comfortable starting position” because Portugal and Austria had been campaigning for the same seat for years, while Germany entered the process later. “That is certainly not ideal. We aimed for another temporary seat on the Security Council. Unfortunately, we did not achieve it, and I am convinced that this is mainly due to structural reasons” Frei stated. He insists that the Chancellor bears no blame for the outcome. “The Chancellor is not affected by this, but all of this can also be very well explained structurally” Frei argued, cautioning against exaggerating the setback. “It is a problem, but it is not the Chancellor’s problem”.
