Union Leader Supports Raising Retirement Years to Secure Future Benefits

Sepp Müller, the vice chairman of the unions’ parliamentary group, has voiced support for gradually raising the retirement age to 70. Though he stated that he is not yet familiar with the findings of the pension commission, he believes the proposal for a higher retirement age is correct. Speaking to RTL and ntv, Müller argued that it is “right” for their generation to work until 70 in the 2050s, while at the same time allowing their parents’ generation-who began working at the age of 16-to enjoy a well-deserved retirement after 45 years. He added that achieving this generational balance is crucial. Furthermore, Müller stressed the necessity of stabilizing the current pension levels to ensure that present generations will be able to afford to retire. Consequently, he concluded that it is advisable and necessary to implement the findings of the commission into actual law.
