Union Questions Coalition’s Capacity Amid Calls for Reform and Stability

Steffen Bilger, a CDU politician, voiced concerns regarding the ability of the CDU and SPD coalition to function effectively. Speaking to the “Handelsblatt”, he argued that recent instances of blocking actions and the assigning of blame by the SPD were costing the political establishment valuable public trust. Bilger stressed that the coalition must immediately shift into a “constructive reform mode” and begin delivering results.

He related his comments to the critique issued by Peter Altmaier, the former Federal Minister of Economics (CDU). Altmaier had expressed grave concerns that the federal government might be on the verge of a state crisis-a situation he suggested was unprecedented in his political life or perhaps since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949.

Bilger noted that he was not alone in this criticism, stating that many citizens were currently contacting politicians to appeal to them based on their civic responsibility. He acknowledged that the current challenges facing the nation, both domestically and internationally, are significant. Therefore, the Union and SPD must cooperate fully to push necessary reforms and ensure the country moves forward. Despite the difficulties, Bilger concluded with confidence, asserting that “Our democratic institutions are robust and have always proven stable during difficult times”.
