The US military apparently conducted an attack on Iranian positions located on the island of Larak in the Strait of Hormuz. According to US media, a US official confirmed last Sunday evening that this action marked the first military operation since a weeks-long ceasefire in the Iran conflict. Reports indicated that Iranian Revolutionary Guard units were observed attempting to launch rockets loaded with naval mines into the narrow waterway.
The official stated that US forces destroyed two Iranian rocket launchers on the island. Meanwhile, the Iranian news agency Fars reported that residents described an explosion near Larak island on Sunday. The island itself is situated close to the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a central global shipping route that remains at the epicenter of regional tensions.
Last week, the US Central Command announced the completion of clearing mines from international shipping lanes. In connection with the situation, President Donald Trump had stated that Iran was informed that any vessel or boat placing new mines would be “immediately and systematically destroyed.” In response to the attack, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards announced retaliation on Sunday, accusing “the US-Zionist enemy” of carrying out the strike, which they claimed resulted in casualties among Iranian forces and civilians.
