USA vs. Turkey: Upset Defeat Propels Hosts to Quarterfinals of FIFA World Cup

In the recent FIFA World Cup match, the USA defeated Turkey 2:3 in their final group stage game. Despite the loss, the United States secured their spot in the round of 16 as the top team in Group D, a result that was predetermined earlier in the tournament, and Turkey’s elimination was also decided before kickoff.

Meanwhile, a parallel match between Paraguay and Australia ended in a 0-0 tie. Australia therefore advanced as the second-placed team, and Paraguay moved on as the third-placed team with four points.

During the USA versus Turkey fixture, the Turks took an early lead. Auston Trusty netted the opener in the 3rd minute, after a corner kick delivered by Sebastian Berhalter. However, the team managed by Vincenzo Montella showed determination, finding the equalizer in the 10th minute thanks to Arda Güler. Güler capitalized on a play involving Baris Yilmaz, slotting the ball into the net from close range.

Turkey resumed the lead in the 31st minute when Baris Yilmaz deflected a shot from Orkun Kökcü into the goal. The USA, however, did not give up, recovering the tie in the 49th minute with a long-range strike from Sebastian Berhalter. In stoppage time, Kaan Ayhan scored the decisive goal for Turkey. He capitalized on a throw-in and a low cross from Can Uzun, putting the ball into the net from a short distance.

Although the USA possessed more of the ball and generated numerous chances, they could not prevent their defeat. The Turkish side demonstrated remarkable efficiency, consistently capitalizing on the limited opportunities they received.
