Verdi Announces Protests Against Criticized Health Care Reform Plans

Frank Werneke, the head of the Verdi union, has strongly criticized the government’s proposed reforms for the healthcare system and announced plans for protests. Speaking to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Saturday edition), Werneke stated that the health package presented by Minister Warken has a “negative bias”. Consequently, his union plans to “organize protests against the planned cuts in the healthcare system by the federal government in the coming weeks”.

Werneke’s reaction was prompted by the plans for restructuring the healthcare system put forward by Minister Nina Warken (CDU). The union chief criticized the proposal, arguing that “the distribution of burdens clearly disadvantages hospitals and insured patients, while the out-of-practice doctors and the pharmaceutical industry remain relatively untouched”.

He warned that if the package passes as is, it will lead to substantial revenue shortfalls in many hospitals that are already struggling, calling this what he believes will be “the death blow in many places”. Werneke concluded by emphasizing the dire state of care, stating, “The situation in the hospitals is highly dramatic, and the health care provision is at risk”.
