The Verdi union has officially rejected the possibility of Unicredit, an Italian bank, acquiring Commerzbank. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Verdi’s federal specialist group leader for banks, Duscheck, stated that the opposition is based on the potential impact on the German economy, particularly concerning job security within both institutions.
Highlighting the responsibility carried by major investors, especially the German federal government with its 12 percent stake, Duscheck emphasized that these groups are stewards for German medium-sized businesses, millions of private customers, and thousands of employees.
Furthermore, he asserted that maintaining the Commerzbank’s independence offers the best foundation for securing jobs and ensuring a strong future for both banks. Verdi stated its commitment to standing alongside its members, actively fighting to preserve employment opportunities, maintaining a strong physical presence through local branches nationwide, and securing operational co-determination at an equitable level. It was noted that the Hypovereinsbank is a subsidiary of Unicredit.
