The German government plans to appoint Boris Ruge as the new ambassador to Kyiv. According to reports citing government sources, Ruge currently serves as the Deputy Secretary General of NATO for Political Affairs and Security Policy. His extensive diplomatic experience includes roles as Vice-Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Envoy to Washington, and Ambassador to Riyadh. Ruge will succeed Heiko Thoms, who is scheduled to transfer from Kyiv to Madrid this summer after a year in Ukraine.
This appointment is part of a larger personnel package from the Foreign Office, which is expected to be confirmed by the cabinet this Wednesday. These changes represent the routine, rotational staff adjustments typically made during the summer. Sources within the government emphasized that highly experienced diplomats are being assigned to central key posts to ensure that German interests are properly represented.
Further changes are also planned within the ministry itself. Christian Buck, who previously headed the Political Department for Near and Middle East, Africa, and Latin America within the Foreign Office, will take on the role of Deputy Secretary General for Operations. He will utilize his expertise gained in conflict and crisis regions, having previously served as the representative for the Near and Middle East, Ambassador to Tripoli, and head of the Foreign Office’s Crisis Response Center. Additional transfers are scheduled for the embassies in Beirut, Budapest, and Buenos Aires.
