Volkswagen appears to be considering, for the first time, whether to offer models developed in China to the European market. According to a report by the “Handelsblatt”, citing sources within the group, these considerations extend from simple import to potential future manufacturing in Europe.
Two specific models are being named as candidates. One is an SUV developed in collaboration with the Chinese partner SAIC. The other is a model based on VW’s new CSP platform for China. Insiders suggest the latter option is more likely, though a final decision has yet to be made. The workforce is reportedly prepared to support these plans, provided that current commitments regarding factory locations are upheld and that the utilization of German plants is secured. The VW plant in Zwickau has been mentioned as a possible location for production. Volkswagen declined to comment when asked for a statement.
For the corporation, this shift represents a strategic change. Historically, vehicles intended for the European market were predominantly developed within Europe. However, in recent years, VW has invested billions of euros to expand its development and production capacity within China.
Meanwhile, CEO Oliver Blume is currently preparing a comprehensive restructuring package for Europe’s largest automotive group. The management’s plan includes capacity reduction in various plants alongside job cuts. Recent reports have suggested that at least 100,000 jobs could potentially be lost in the coming years.
