Volkswagen is preparing its next safety recall initiative, only a few weeks after executing a massive recall concerning a defective steering screw. According to reports referencing company insiders from the “Handelsblatt”, this new campaign will mainly affect a low five-digit number of electric vehicles in Germany.
The focus of this new recall centers on faulty battery cells. In rare instances, these cells could overheat, carrying the risk of a fire in extreme cases. Affected models include specific production runs of the VW ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, and ID. Buzz, dating from 2023 to 2025, in addition to several thousand Cupra Born models.
Volkswagen confirmed the matter to the newspaper. A company spokesman stated that internal quality checks revealed that some high-voltage battery cells did not meet quality standards due to production errors by suppliers. Appropriate actions are being prepared in coordination with authorities for Germany and other markets, slated for activation soon.
As an immediate measure, the company plans to restrict the maximum charge level of affected vehicles to 80 percent. Recalls are already taking place in the UK and the USA, where over 22,000 ID.4 vehicles are reportedly implicated. The overall scope of the action across Europe remains undetermined. This comes shortly after Volkswagen recalled approximately 4.6 million vehicles across various group brands back in late September due to a corrosion-prone screw in the steering system.
