Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul recently emphasized the critical importance of partnering with African nations ahead of an upcoming trip to Mauritania, Nigeria, and South Africa. Speaking on Monday before his departure, Wadephul stressed that reliable cooperation with their African partners is especially vital amid current global geopolitical turbulence. He clarified that Germany and Europe’s interests extend beyond merely wanting a stable and prosperous neighboring continent; rather, the aim is to offer mutually beneficial partnerships. This necessity led him to visit important African states for the third time in recent months.
While these three countries span different regions of the continent and face distinct issues, they share several common challenges that Wadephul highlighted: ensuring fair trade partnerships, maintaining free and open shipping routes, and securing a dependable supply of critical raw materials. Furthermore, he stressed that combating extremism and terrorism is essential for guaranteeing human freedom.
In discussing the specific roles of these nations, Wadephul noted Mauritania’s significance as a stable state within a volatile region. He acknowledged that the ongoing crisis in the Sahel presents the country with massive humanitarian and security hurdles, assuring that Germany is willing to provide increased support. Meanwhile, Nigeria was recognized as a leading economic and political force in West Africa. Finally, regarding South Africa, the Foreign Minister mentioned that relations have recently been strengthened to a “strategic partnership,” underscoring its role as a key ally for Germany.
