Manfred Weber, the European Christian Democrats’ party and faction chief, has thrown his support behind Ilse Aigner (CSU), the President of the Bavarian State Parliament, for the role of Federal President. Speaking to the Funke Media Group newspapers, the CSU vice-chairman stated that “Ilse Aigner would be a strong Federal President who fits this time”. Weber added that she has the ability to gain the public’s trust and shape policy accordingly, calling this exactly what Germany requires now. He confirmed that Aigner has his complete support. His endorsement follows a prior campaign by CSU leader Markus Söder, who had already backed Aigner as a potential successor to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Weber noted that he was pleased to see the feedback on Markus Söder’s proposal being very positive.
