Wildfire Escalation Forces Further Evacuations in Monschau Region

Due to the current spread of fire and smoke in the Hohen Venn region, the city of Monschau has ordered the immediate evacuation of additional areas. Residents in the streets Ruitzhof and Geisberg were informed via the Nina warning app and cell broadcasting, the city reported on Sunday evening. A support center has been set up at the secondary school in Simmerath for individuals who cannot independently stay with family or friends. The Monschau fire department is continuously monitoring the fire’s development. Firefighting efforts are being supported by personnel from the Aachen fire department and the fire departments of the Aachen city region. Cross-border cooperation was facilitated via Emric to support operational measures on the Belgian side. Belgian authorities had already ordered the evacuation of the town of Küschelscheid, as the fire front was still approximately 1.5 kilometers from the German border, and nearby residents were advised to leave the area.
