Following the violent protests in France, German security authorities are increasing their preparations for potential copycat events. A spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior told the dpa agency on Wednesday that the federal and state security agencies are monitoring the situation “carefully.” There is also close communication, for instance, through the Joint Extremism and Terrorism Defense Center (GETZ). Ongoing risk assessments are being conducted in close coordination with partners such as France and Italy.
Furthermore, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is strengthening the observation of “relevant websites and social media channels” where calls for violent protests or riots might be spread. If the need arises, the Federal Police, along with the state police forces, will provide assistance as usual. Furthermore, individuals who might plan to enter Germany to participate in such riots will reportedly be turned away directly at the border by the Federal Police.
This intensified monitoring comes in the context of protests announced for October 31, spearheaded by the initiative “Gen Z stands up”-in cities including Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Frankfurt, and Munich. There is concern that these demonstrations could escalate, similar to what occurred in France.
