German tennis player Alexander Zverev won the US Open final on Sunday, defeating American Ben Shelton in four sets with scores of 6:3, 7:6, 5:7, and 6:2.
Zverev started the match strong in the first set, securing an early break. He subsequently demonstrated composure and earned a second break, successfully taking the lead against the visibly nervous American.
In the second set, Shelton grew more aggressive but could not put decisive pressure on the German. Since Zverev also struggled to secure a break, the set went to a tiebreak, which the Hamburg player decisively won.
The third set was similarly balanced. However, Shelton prevented a tiebreak by earning his first break of the match, which allowed him to take the set. Zverev responded immediately by winning a break back. During the final set, the German made significant strides toward the title by securing another break, which he eventually converted into a controlled victory via his serve.
This triumph marks Zverev’s second Grand Slam title, following his win at the French Open in June. Furthermore, he is the second German athlete in 37 years to win the men’s singles title at Flushing Meadows, following Boris Becker.
