Should Life Jackets Be Required?

The German Life Saving Society (DLRG) is advocating for mandatory life vests, particularly for children participating in water sports activities. DLRG President Ute Vogt, in recent statements to Bavarian media outlets, expressed her support for the measure, citing its potential to significantly reduce accidents.

Vogt’s call comes in the wake of a tragic incident in early July, where a young boy and his father drowned in the Eibsee lake after the child fell from a rented pedal boat. Both victims were unable to swim. Vogt, who has led the DLRG since 2021, believes a requirement for life vest use when renting water sports equipment is a necessary step.

Beyond immediate safety measures, Vogt also emphasized the importance of strategic investment in aquatic infrastructure. With the start of summer holidays in Southern Germany, she urged responsible allocation of funds designated for swimming facilities. Many DLRG local chapters currently face considerable logistical challenges, often traveling significant distances to reach swimming pools and conduct children’s training programs, especially in rural areas. Vogt proposed a nationwide initiative involving the federal government, state governments and local municipalities to ensure every primary school has access to a nearby swimming facility. She suggested the creation of municipal swimming centers, similar to industrial parks, that could be shared by multiple schools.

Finally, Vogt championed increased recognition for the vital work of DLRG volunteers. She suggested employers offer compensatory time off as a means of acknowledging their commitment, noting that many volunteers currently utilize vacation time to fulfill their responsibilities.
