The German government has announced a halt to arms exports to Israel, specifically those intended for use in the ongoing offensive in the Gaza Strip. The decision, communicated Friday, signifies a pause in approvals for the delivery of military goods potentially deployed within the coastal territory.
The move follows a decision by the Israeli cabinet overnight to intensify military operations in Gaza, a plan which reportedly includes the capture of Gaza City and the potential temporary displacement of its approximately 800,000 residents. Government officials have expressed increasing concern that this escalated approach obscures the path toward achieving stated war objectives.
Acknowledging Israel’s right to self-defense following the attacks by Hamas, the government emphasized the urgent need for the release of hostages and progress toward a ceasefire. Disarming Hamas is considered essential, with a firm position that the organization must not play a future role in Gaza.
The government articulated deep concern regarding the continuing suffering of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip. With the planned offensive, the German government asserts that Israel bears increased responsibility for ensuring the provision of supplies to the affected populace. They are demanding comprehensive access for humanitarian aid deliveries, including those facilitated by UN organizations and other non-governmental institutions and expect a substantial and sustainable improvement in the humanitarian situation.
Furthermore, the government strongly urged Israel to refrain from any additional steps toward the annexation of the West Bank.
