Ukraine Security: Expert Says Russia’s Approval Not Needed for Guarantees.

Security expert Nico Lange has voiced strong opinions regarding discussions surrounding potential security guarantees for Ukraine, coinciding with ongoing talks in Washington focused on the nation’s future. Lange argues that conditioning such guarantees on Russian approval is fundamentally flawed.

“There is a segment of those involved who believe Russian consent is necessary for these security guarantees and I consider that absolute nonsense” Lange stated in comments published by the Bavarian media group. “We don’t ask Russia for permission regarding the future equipping of the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) to protect ourselves from Russia. The threat to us and the threat to Ukraine are the same: it is the imperialistic, aggressive Russia of Vladimir Putin.

Lange further addressed the debate surrounding the potential deployment of ground troops, suggesting the terminology itself is misleading. “The term ‘ground troops’ sounds martial and instills fear, provoking the reaction that it is undesirable” he explained. “The notion that this involves sending Bundeswehr soldiers to the contact line is incorrect.

He clarified the core question revolves around the potential form of a European military presence “within” Ukraine following a ceasefire – not directly at the front lines, but positioned further inland, potentially including the deployment of fighter aircraft to bolster Ukrainian air defense capabilities.

From a political perspective, Lange emphasizes Germany’s responsibility to participate. “If a European military presence is established in Ukraine to secure peace in Europe long-term, I see no reason why Germany – as an important, large and strong nation – should not participate” he stated. “If a “Zeitenwende” (pivotal moment) has occurred, then such questions must be answered differently than in the past”.
