Barley Rejects German Constitutional Court Role – Report

Katarina Barley, a Vice-President of the European Parliament, has dismissed speculation linking her to a potential appointment as a judge at Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe.

In a statement to the “Rheinische Post”, Ms. Barley indicated her continued commitment to her role within the European Parliament, stating she generally does not comment on personnel matters, but affirmed she “still has a lot to do in Europe.

The statement comes after the unsuccessful attempt to elect Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf to the court. While the Social Democratic Party (SPD) has identified a new candidate for the position, their identity remains confidential. Recent discussions within Berlin had briefly included Ms. Barley, a former Justice Minister, as a potential nominee. The process of selecting a judge for the Federal Constitutional Court continues as the SPD seeks a successful candidate.
