Greens Criticize Minister’s Support for Palantir Surveillance Software

A prominent Green Party lawmaker has sharply criticized the Interior Minister’s stance on the controversial data analysis software developed by the U.S. firm Palantir.

Marcel Emmerich, the Green Party’s domestic policy spokesperson, argued that reliance on such technology ultimately undermines both civil liberties and the foundations of the rule of law. He expressed concerns regarding Palantir’s lack of transparency, potential for dependence on U.S. entities and association with ideologies deemed antithetical to democratic principles.

These comments come in response to statements made by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, who indicated no reservations about police utilizing Palantir’s software. Dobrindt asserted his priority is effective crime investigation and prevention and that the software’s origin is not a primary concern.

Emmerich advocates for the development and implementation of German and European alternatives to Palantir, emphasizing the need for systems that are legally sound, transparent and independent. He believes increased security can be achieved without compromising democratic values or national autonomy. He characterized the Minister’s continued support for Palantir as irresponsible.
