Government Data Reveals Extent of Islamist Scene in Germany
Recent figures released by the German government highlight the scale of the Islamist scene within the country. According to information provided by the Federal Interior Ministry in response to a request from Left Party parliamentarian Cansu Özdemir – reported by “Welt” – security services currently classify approximately 447 individuals as suspected Islamist threats.
This category denotes individuals deemed capable of committing serious acts endangering the state and who are subject to close observation by security agencies, often requiring significant resources. An additional 481 individuals are classified as “relevant persons” encompassing leadership figures, logistical coordinators, or key contacts within the extremist spectrum. These figures remain at a high level, although there’s been a slight decrease compared to the previous year (April 2024: suspected threats: 480; relevant persons: 504).
Overall, the government estimates the Islamist network in Germany to comprise roughly 28,280 individuals – a slight increase from prior assessments. Özdemir emphasized the ongoing real danger posed by Islamists in Germany, noting that 40 individuals from the suspected threat and relevant persons categories are currently facing charges.
In approximately 25 of these 40 cases, individuals are accused of membership in a terrorist organization abroad. Four proceedings allege the formation of a terrorist group and in another four, the focus is on crimes against humanity.
The government attributes radicalization trends to the increasing shift of Islamist activity into the digital realm, observing a decline in the identification of in-person radicalization, such as within mosques.
Islamist influencers are described as operating with targeted strategies, adapting their approaches to suit various online platforms. They also connect their digital agitation with real-world actions, including demonstrations and flash mobs. The government notes that these influencers often leverage emotionally charged topics related to Islam, presenting them with claims of alleged Islamophobia within Germany.
