NRW Election: CDU Defies National Trend with Strong Gains

North Rhine-Westphalia’s (NRW) Minister-President Hendrik Wüst of the CDU has expressed satisfaction with his party’s performance in the recent local elections. Addressing the WDR television station on Sunday evening, Wüst noted the CDU achieved a result eight percentage points above the national average. He characterized this as a “remarkable” outcome, particularly given prevailing national trends.

Preliminary projections by Infratest Dimap for the WDR place the CDU’s overall share of the vote in NRW at 34.2 percent. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) secured 22.6 percent, while the Green Party garnered 11.7 percent. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) achieved 3.4 percent, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) received 16.4 percent, the Left Party obtained 5.4 percent and “Other” parties collectively secured 6.3 percent.

Acknowledging the AfD’s significant showing, Minister-President Wüst emphasized the need for focused attention to the underlying concerns driving voter sentiment. He urged addressing factors contributing to voter dissatisfaction, citing issues such as migration-related poverty and precarious housing situations, particularly prevalent in the Ruhr region, as areas requiring immediate action.
