German Homebuilding Permits Surge in July

Data released Thursday by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) indicates a significant rebound in residential construction approvals in Germany. In July 2025, 22,100 residential units received building permits, marking a 30.0 percent increase, or 5,100 more approvals, compared to July 2024, a month that saw construction activity at a twelve-year low for that period.

Year-to-date, from January to July 2025, 131,800 residential units were approved, reflecting a 6.6 percent rise, equivalent to 8,200 additional units, compared to the same seven-month period in 2024. These figures encompass approvals for new residential buildings and for residential additions within existing structures.

The number of building permits issued for new residential buildings saw a particularly strong increase, reaching 17,800 in July 2025. This represents a 33.2 percent jump, or 4,400 more approvals, than in the same month of the previous year. Over the January-July timeframe, new construction approvals increased by 8.2 percent, or 8,100 units.

Approvals for single-family homes saw a notable rise, increasing by 15.0 percent, adding 3,300 permits to reach a total of 25,400. In contrast, approvals for two-family homes decreased by 6.6 percent, resulting in 7,100 approved dwellings. Multi-family homes, the most prevalent building type, saw 69,300 new units approved from January to July 2025, a 5.6 percent increase, or 3,700 additional units, compared to the previous year.
