Sunday’s opening fixture of the fourth Bundesliga matchday saw Eintracht Frankfurt succumb to a narrow 3-4 defeat against Union Berlin in a captivating contest. Oliver Burke emerged as the standout performer of the match, netting a hat-trick for the visitors.
Union Berlin initially took the lead in the ninth minute through Ilyas Ansah, swiftly followed by two goals from Burke, extending their advantage to 2-0. Frankfurt managed to pull one back just before halftime thanks to Nathaniel Brown.
The second half saw Union Berlin maintain their effective gameplay. Burke added further goals in the 53rd and 56th minutes, seemingly sealing the victory for Berlin. Frankfurt attempted a recovery, but struggled to break down Union’s well-organized defense for a considerable period.
Can Uzun finally found the back of the net for Frankfurt in the 80th minute, sparking a late surge. Further drama ensued when a penalty was awarded in the 85th minute, allowing Jonathan Burkardt to score and inject renewed tension into the game. Shortly after, Union Berlin coach Steffen Baumgart was sent off for throwing a paper ball onto the pitch. Despite a lengthy period of added time, Union Berlin successfully defended their lead and secured the win.
As a result of this defeat, Frankfurt slips to sixth place in the league standings, while Union Berlin advances to tenth. Frankfurt’s next challenge sees them travel to Mönchengladbach on Saturday, while Union Berlin faces Hamburg SV the following day.
