Rising Numbers & Why

A growing number of individuals are losing their German citizenship due to intentional false statements made during the naturalization process, according to a response from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, led by the CSU party, to a query from the AfD parliamentary group. The information, reported by “Welt” newspaper, indicates a notable increase in these revocations.

Up to September 11th of this year, 293 naturalizations have been effectively withdrawn under Section 35 of the Nationality Act. This figure surpasses the 232 cases recorded in 2023 and the 174 cases in 2022, reflecting a consistent upward trend.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior clarifies that these figures represent decisions that have become final or have otherwise taken effect. Consequently, it is possible that some decisions are recorded at a later date. The rise in overall naturalizations in recent years is also contributing to the increased number of revocations, as a larger pool of individuals are subject to review.
