The Green Party is advocating for a unified vote across all three candidates for the Federal Constitutional Court during Thursday’s selection process, extending an invitation to the Left Party to join this stance. Green Party leader Felix Banaszak, in statements to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, highlighted a perceived difference in approach between the Left and Green parties, emphasizing the importance of responsible action within a democratic framework.
Banaszak characterized the candidate proposed by the SPD, Sigrid Emmenegger, as “a good and unimpeachable candidate”. He urged the governing coalition to conclude what he described as an “undignified spectacle” of recent months and secure democratic majorities for all three nominees, also engaging with opposition factions.
He acknowledged a lack of adequate consultation with the Green and Left parties prior to the nomination process, expressing concern that recent developments could have jeopardized the selection’s integrity.
The Green Party leadership aims to avoid any further setbacks that could potentially damage the Federal Constitutional Court. Banaszak noted growing public anxieties regarding societal trends, especially concerning the performance of the CDU/CSU, referencing the recent difficulties surrounding the nomination of another potential judge, Brosius-Gersdorf. He suggested that the CDU/CSU had been unduly influenced by populist channels, potentially compromising democratic institutions.
