German States Seek Increased Arms Contracts

Ahead of a meeting between leaders of Germany’s eastern states and Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Thuringia’s Minister-President Mario Voigt (CDU) has advocated for increased federal involvement in the eastern regions of the country.

Voigt, speaking to “Der Stern” magazine, emphasized that the federal government could further prioritize eastern Germany through initiatives like bolstering research and innovation. He specifically highlighted the frustration of modern research institutes awaiting confirmations and funding.

The Minister-President also called for increased financial support from the federal government to cities and districts performing services on behalf of the nation. Voigt pointed to substantial burdens on local municipalities stemming from social costs dictated by federal legislation, arguing for a commensurate and equitable compensation mechanism.

Voigt, who chairs the East German State Leaders Conference, which convenes today in Weimar, anticipates a discussion with Chancellor Merz and Defence Minister Boris Pistorius. The conference is expected to address demands for greater defence-related procurement opportunities. Voigt stated that companies in regions with strong industries, like optics and robotics, possess significant potential to contribute to national security and that the federal government should prioritize their inclusion in contracting processes.

According to “Der Stern”, the East German State Leaders Conference intends to formally reaffirm demands for a share of the federal government’s defence expenditure through a resolution. The resolution is also slated to call for the accelerated expansion of transport and energy infrastructure crucial for defence purposes.

Furthermore, the draft resolution proposes targeted support for “Dual-Use” research – research with applications in both civilian and military sectors – with a focus on the eastern states. The document will also likely urge the federal government to bolster civil defence capabilities in eastern Germany through financial, personnel and organizational enhancements.
