Oktoberfest Security: Union and SPD Praise Response

Following Wednesday’s extensive security operation in Munich, both the Union and SPD parties have expressed approval of the actions taken by security services.

Alexander Throm, interior policy spokesperson for the Union faction (CDU), told the “Rheinische Post” that large-scale events like the Munich Oktoberfest are and have historically been, secured under stringent measures, particularly heightened since the 1980 far-right extremist attack. He emphasized the importance of proactive and decisive responses given the potential for threats surrounding such events.

Sebastian Fiedler, interior policy spokesperson for the SPD faction, echoed this sentiment, stating that security forces are well-prepared for securing large gatherings. He noted that Germany has maintained a heightened, abstract risk assessment for events such as the Munich Oktoberfest, traveling fairs and Christmas markets for many years, which security agencies consistently factor into their strategic planning.

Fiedler explained that detailed security protocols are developed in advance of each event and are coordinated among organizers, municipal authorities and emergency response organizations. He confirmed that no event now takes place without such security measures in place and that German security services demonstrate a high degree of professionalism both behind the scenes and during ongoing operations.
