The German government has expressed confidence in the political stability of France following the unexpected resignation of Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, just weeks after his appointment. Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius, responding to inquiries from the dts news agency, stated that there is “no reason for doubt” regarding France’s stability.
He acknowledged that the process of forming a new government will likely take some time and that the situation will be observed. Kornelius advised allowing space for the process to unfold and enabling President Emmanuel Macron the opportunity to identify a successor.
President Macron appointed Lecornu as Prime Minister on September 9th, with Lecornu presenting his cabinet just on Sunday. The composition of the proposed government remained largely unchanged, prompting renewed threats of a vote of no confidence from several opposition parties.
Lecornu represents the fifth Prime Minister to serve under President Macron since his re-election in May 2022. Macron now has the option of appointing a new Prime Minister or dissolving parliament and calling for fresh elections.
The governmental crisis, which has been escalating for several months, is primarily rooted in France’s challenging financial situation and high levels of debt, necessitating significant cuts to public spending in the coming year.
