“Growing Pressure for Nationwide Firework Ban in Germany Amid Rising Public Support and Safety Concerns”
A petition initiated by the Berlin Police Union calling for a nationwide ban on fireworks in Germany has experienced a significant surge in support, particularly during the New Year’s Eve period, highlighting escalating concerns over public safety and the strain on emergency services. The digital petition, launched in early 2025, saw its signature count jump from 2.7 million to approximately 3 million in a single evening, signaling a renewed wave of public discontent with the current regulations. While the possibility of duplicate signatures remains, the substantial increase underscores the growing momentum behind the movement.
The petition initially gained traction shortly after its launch in January 2025, quickly amassing 1.8 million signatures. However, the subsequent rate of additions slowed, until the dramatic spike witnessed during the most recent New Year’s celebrations. The Police Union’s demand for a comprehensive ban reflects a frustration with recurring incidents of violence and fatalities linked to firework use.
The union’s statement explicitly argues that “there is no way around a nationwide firework ban” citing the “unprecedented” nature of last year’s events. These events included targeted attacks on police officers and emergency responders, alongside a tragic toll of at least five reported fatalities from firework accidents and a number of injuries, consistent with previous years.
The escalating signature count and the union’s forceful stance are placing increased political pressure on the German government. The current regulations, which allow for the sale of fireworks under certain conditions, are facing growing scrutiny. Critics argue the existing system has proven ineffective in preventing injuries and safeguarding public infrastructure, especially during already strained periods for law enforcement and medical personnel. The situation raises questions about the government’s ability to balance public freedom with the imperative of public safety and the escalating economic burden incurred by managing incidents related to firework misuse. Future legislative action on this issue appears increasingly likely, prompted by both the mounting public pressure and the demonstrable limitations of the current framework.
