Deutsche Bahn Eyes Sale of Its Non-European Rail Operations

Deutsche Bahn is reportedly considering selling the non‑European operating arm that trades under the name “DB International Operations”. The Handelsblatt (Tuesday edition) cites several corporate managers for the story. The unit, which is part of the DB E.C.O. Group, runs train services in India, Uruguay and, more recently, Egypt.

DB International Operations works alongside its sister company, “DB Engineering and Consulting”, which has handled route‑planning projects in places such as Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Canada. Together the two entities reported a last annual turnover of almost one billion euros and an operating profit of 35 million euros, underscoring their profitability.

What will happen to DB Engineering and Consulting after a potential sale is still unclear. The firm currently contributes to German infrastructure work, most notably on the refurbishment of the Riedbahn line between Frankfurt and Mannheim.

A Deutsche Bahn spokesperson told the newspaper that “projects and businesses will continue as before under the current arrangement”. The entire DB E.C.O. Group employs 8,500 staff.
