CDU Rejects Schleswig-Holstein’s Sugar‑Tax Initiative Ahead of National Party Conference

The CDU will not pursue Schleswig‑Holstein’s proposal to introduce a sugar tax in Germany. According to the Tuesday edition of the “Rheinische Post”, the application commission for the federal party congress, which takes place on 20 and 21 February in Stuttgart, delivered a clear rejection of the corresponding request from the CDU’s Schleswig‑Holstein state association. The commission emphasized that the CDU opposes tax increases.

A few weeks ago, Minister‑President Daniel Günther described a sugar tax as “politically and economically long overdue” because excessive sugar intake leads to significant health problems and huge societal costs. In its application to the federal party congress, Günther’s state association had demanded the introduction of a national sugar tax on beverages with high sugar content, particularly soft drinks and energy drinks.
