Former Chancellor Merkel Rules Out Running for German Presidency Amid Speculation and Calls for First Female Head of State.

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) has rejected speculation that she might run for the office of the German President next year. A spokesperson for the former Chancellor’s office told the “Tagesspiegel” that “this is far‑fetched”.

Earlier, the tabloid “Bild” reported that some senior CDU figures are worried the Greens might propose Merkel for the presidency. Historically, no former chancellor has taken the presidency after leaving office.

The Federal Convention, which convenes to elect the successor of President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier, is scheduled to meet in early 2027. The Union coalition is expected to constitute the largest faction within the assembly, and calls for the first female head of state in Germany continue to grow.
