German Parliament Speaker Julia Klöckner (CDU) visited the Israel‑controlled part of the Gaza Strip on Thursday. In the so‑called “yellow zone” she was escorted by Israeli army personnel.
She had already traveled to Israel on Tuesday, where she addressed the Israeli Knesset, toured the Holocaust memorial, and visited the site of the Nova music festival.
The Green Party co‑chair Franziska Brantner criticized Klöckner’s trip to the yellow zone, accusing the CDU politician of ignoring the Palestinian perspective. In an interview with Der Spiegel, Brantner said, “It’s good that the Parliament Speaker wants to see Gaza firsthand. But if she does so without even listening to the Palestinian side, she must accept the accusation that she only wants to perceive the reality of the region unilaterally”.
Brantner added that no solution can exist unless the Palestinian position is included on equal footing. “A Parliament Speaker should be especially aware of this responsibility” she said.
