Dairy farmers are urging Federal Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer (CSU) to take action against falling milk prices and to secure greater price stability.
Karsten Schmal, vice‑president of the German Farmers’ Association (DBV) and DBV milk president, told ”Bild” that the risk‑mitigation reserve agreed in the coalition contract must be implemented right away. He said the minister must act now and introduce robust crisis tools. According to Schmal, it is unacceptable for farmers if their high‑quality milk is reduced to worthless waste.
He added that a tax‑free risk‑mitigation reserve should be introduced immediately and that reliable forecast models and assistance with price‑hedging systems are also needed. Schmal stressed that the entire supply chain must engage in responsible price setting to safeguard domestic supply, as dairy farms are under increasing economic pressure from current price trends.
