German SPD Spokesperson Calls Iran War Illegal, Urges US and Israel to End Conflict

Foreign‑policy spokesman for the SPD faction in the Bundestag, Adis Ahmetovic, urged Israel and the United States to bring the war against Iran to an end. He told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that the conflict is “international‑law‑violating” and described it as an act of aggression. Ahmetovic stressed that Germany cannot participate under Articles 25 and 26 of the Basic Law, which require that all federal legislation conform to international legal norms. He added that the SPD seeks a swift resolution through de‑escalation and diplomacy, not further military action.

Article 25 of the Basic Law states: “The general rules of international law are part of federal law. They precede domestic laws and create rights and duties directly for the residents of the federal territory”. Article 26(1) reads: “Actions that are intended to disturb the peaceful coexistence of peoples, in particular the preparation of an attack war, are unconstitutional and must be punished”.

Anton Hofreiter, chair of the European Committee in the Bundestag and member of the Green Party, told the same outlet that the assault on Iran is “highly questionable under international law”. He pointed out that the Iranian regime itself has committed internationally unlawful crimes, and that international law includes the “responsibility to protect” – a duty to shield people from crimes against humanity. Hofreiter acknowledged that many Iranians might welcome the attack, saying that international law can be contradictory and produce dilemmas.
