Boris Palmer Declines Baden-Württemberg Cabinet Invite, Stays on as Tübingen Mayor

Boris Palmer, mayor of Tübingen, has apparently decided not to join the new state cabinet under Cem Özdemir of the Greens.

According to the “Stuttgarter Zeitung”, citing reports from Greens circles, the now‑independent Palmer said he will continue to hold his post in Tübingen.

Özdemir, who is set to become Minister‑President, reportedly told a state‑board meeting that he had discussed a possible cabinet seat with Palmer. Palmer clarified that he would stay in Tübingen. When asked, the mayor confirmed the decision and said he sees no reason to relinquish the office citizens have entrusted to him for eight years.

Palmer resigned from the Greens roughly three years ago but maintained links to the party’s so‑called Realo wing. He endorsed Özdemir during the state election campaign, which fueled speculation that he might join the cabinet.
